IWTBAP, I have two suggestions for you:

1)Print your boarding pass online from your own or someone else's computer. Almost all airlines allow you to do this 24 hours in advance for most flights. You will then have time to act if something is wrong with your tickets.

2) If you make your reservations on an airline Web site, go to the page where you can set up messaging.

It probably would not hurt to call the airline and let them know what happened. It is a worth a shot, tell them you are interviewing for grad school and sound destitute. Maybe you will be able to get some kind of credit or refund. Worst thing they can say is no and you won't be out anything.

I, too, don't understand why the heck the first ticket agent didn't tell you the return flight would be voided! That's ri-donk-ulous! Glad your interview went well. Did you tell your interviewer your travel story? Maybe get some sympathy points, too!

Yikes. I'd have been stuck there, considering I don't have that kind of cash laying around. I'm flying out to Seattle in April, and I'm going to make sure I find someone to read that damn itinerary with me! Hope you get a hit on one of your interviews.
