I am in Rho Chi and I tend to agree with much of what you wrote with regards to many of my colleagues and even myself.

I have worked to get over the 'memorize these details for a test' mentality and am doing much better with case studies and seminars as a result. Real world application is nothing like pick a, b, c, or d on a scantron.

Why no passion? Because the profession doesn't protect itself (read: open more schools even though not enough residencies, job placement decreasing), insurance companies rape everything, and honestly myself and a portion of my class would rather be doctors. In fact two people in my class just got into med school.

all the above ppl are deluded. pharmacy all about profit margins and mark-up, getting the best price for cheap drugs. you forget all the chemistry pharmacology one year after college then you become a salesperson. It was the biggest mistake of my life becoming a pharmacist, I hate every minute of it.

Know you Pharmacokinetics kids! By far and away the number one topic I deal with every day during drug consults and interdisciplinary review meetings. Possible PK/PD issues are also the most common thing I come across and talk to my providers about...you need to know this stuff so you can impact your patients' hospital stay.

Know your shit if you want to be taken seriously.

I know you are still in school but I need to explain one thing to you. AWP is what you use in class, acquisition cost is what you use in the real world. When you do calculation to see if you are making money or losing money on a drug, use acquisition cost not AWP. Nobody pays AWP. Got it.

Generics are more profitable, especially newly generic medication since their "fake cost or AWP or whatever" is inflated so the insurance company may pay $80 for the new generic when it only cost $5 to get it. Generics also cost less to keep on the shelf.

In school I opted for the clinical residency track because I had worked in retail as a tech and an intern for years and was discouraged for the same reasons you state. I'm not sure how the job market in your area is, but here in the Chicago area it's really hard not to go with the flow with corporate orders. They make it clear that if you don't want to jump, there are 20 people who would be more than willing to do it for you. It's a matter of job security, unfortunately.
